Frequently Asked Questions
Straight answers about fees, warranties, financing, shipping, and selling your bike at AK Motors in El Cajon, San Diego.
Fees & Pricing
Do you charge dealer fees or doc fees?
Our only dealer fee is a $70 documentation fee. There are no hidden fees and no prep, reconditioning, or freight charges. You pay the listed price plus the $70 doc fee, plus California sales tax and registration where they apply.
What is the out-the-door price on a bike?
Listed price + $70 doc fee + California sales tax and registration where they apply (+ shipping, if you choose delivery). Text or call 619-550-4419 with the bike you like, and we’ll send you the full out-the-door number in writing before you commit.
Do I pay California sales tax and registration if I live out of state?
It depends on how you buy. If you pay cash, live out of state, and take delivery outside California, we don’t collect California sales tax or registration. You pay any applicable tax and registration directly to your home state. If you finance, or if you pick the bike up in California, we collect California sales tax and registration and register the bike in California.
Are your listed prices negotiable?
No. Our prices are firm. We have a no-haggle policy, so the price you see is the price everyone pays.
Do you give a discount for paying cash?
No. Our prices are the same whether you pay cash or finance, so financing customers get the same price as cash buyers.
Are listed bikes always available?
Inventory moves fast and every bike is subject to prior sale, so please call or text to confirm a bike is still here before you drive over.
Warranty & Protection
Do your used motorcycles come with a warranty?
Our motorcycles are sold as-is. For many bikes, we offer an optional 2-year, unlimited-mile extended warranty. Availability depends on the bike, so ask us about coverage for the specific bike you’re interested in.
Is every bike inspected before sale?
Yes. Every motorcycle goes through our full safety inspection and a road test before it goes home with you. Here’s what we check:
- Controls: throttle snaps back in every steering position; clutch cable checked for fraying; two working mirrors, tightened; gas cap opens freely.
- Electrical: battery terminals; front and rear brake light activation, horn, turn signals, headlight, and taillight; battery load test before the bike leaves; charging system tested at 5,000 rpm (fails under 13 volts).
- Engine and fluids: oil level and condition, including the drain bolt; oil leaks, including the oil cap O-ring; coolant checked and filled; air filter; cooling fan kicks on and the bike doesn’t overheat.
- Brakes, tires, and chain: brake pads (fail if under 30%) and brake fluid color and condition; tires for cracks, age, and wear, plus valve stems; tire pressure filled; chain slack and tight spots, with rear wheel alignment checked; chain cleaned and lubed.
- Suspension and hardware: fork seals checked for leaks; handlebars, front and rear axles and pinch bolts, brake pedal and lever nuts, suspension linkages, engine bolts, top and bottom triple clamps, foot pegs, and shift pedal (with Loctite) all tightened; missing fairing bolts replaced.
- Road test: 10-mile road test.
What happens if something goes wrong right after I buy?
Call or text us at 619-550-4419. We’ll take care of you. We’re understanding and work with our customers, and we also run a full repair shop in El Cajon.
Can I return a motorcycle?
No. All sales are final, and there is no cooling-off period. The only exception is our 1-hour test-ride window (see “Can I test ride a bike?”).
Can I get a pre-purchase inspection?
Yes. We do a pre-purchase inspection and share our findings with you. You’re also welcome to bring your own mechanic to our shop to look the bike over.
Financing
Do you offer financing?
Yes. We work with many lenders covering all credit types, including bad credit or no credit. Apply online at akmotorcycles.com/apply-for-finance/ and our finance team will get back to you quickly.
How much down payment do I need?
There’s no minimum. Depending on approval, $0 down is possible. Once you apply, we’ll send you the down payment and monthly payment options for the bikes you like.
Can I finance if I live out of state?
Yes. You can apply online, send the documents the lender needs, and finish the paperwork by email. For financed purchases, we collect California sales tax and registration and register the bike in California.
Buying & Shipping
Can I buy a motorcycle remotely?
Yes. We send you photos and video of the bike, plus an out-the-door price including the $70 doc fee and shipping. You pay, we arrange shipping, and we handle the paperwork.
What payment methods do you accept?
Cash, credit card, debit card, Venmo, Zelle, Cash App, bank transfer, wire, cashier’s check, and financing.
Do you ship nationwide? How much does it cost?
Yes, we ship nationwide. Outside California, shipping typically costs $350 to $1,100, depending on where you live. Delivery within California depends on where you live, so call or text 619-550-4419 for a quote.
How do title and registration work?
We handle registration and title paperwork for the bikes we sell. We don’t offer standalone registration services. For California buyers and financed buyers, we register the bike in California. For out-of-state cash buyers taking delivery outside California, we send you the paperwork and title so you can register the bike in your home state. Registration and title paperwork usually takes about 30 to 60 days.
Do you take deposits or hold bikes?
Deposits and holds are handled case by case. Give us a call at 619-550-4419.
Can I test ride a bike?
Yes, with one rule, for liability reasons. You buy the bike in full first, and then you have 1 hour to ride it. If you bring it back within that hour with no damage, we reverse the purchase and give you a full refund, including the $70 doc fee and any tax collected. Financed buyers can use the 1-hour window too. It is the only exception to our no-returns policy.
Selling & Trade-In
Do you buy motorcycles?
Yes. We buy all major brands, including Honda, Yamaha, Kawasaki, Suzuki, BMW, and Triumph. Bring your bike and title to our El Cajon showroom for a free, no-obligation quote. If you accept, you leave with a check the same day.
How do I get a quote without coming in?
Text or email photos of the bike, any damage, and the year, make, model, and mileage to 619-550-4419 or info@akmotorcycles.com.
Can I trade in my bike toward another one?
Yes. Trade-ins are welcome. Send us your bike’s details and tell us which bike in our inventory you’re interested in.
Do you buy bikes that still have a loan on them?
Yes. We buy motorcycles that still have a loan on them.
