Tips for riding safely on the freeway

From beginner riders to advanced

The freeway can be an intimidating place for most beginner riders. Here at AK Motors, we highly value our customer’s safety; so we’ve put together a list of tips for safe riding on the freeway! On-ramps are highly dangerous where traffic is merging onto or off the highway. They often consist of sharp turns, forcing motorcyclists to lean hard to turn their motorcycle. Even more so, riders should be aware of the increased dangers on-ramps pose when they are wet or slippery. Successfully negotiating the curve of the on-ramp comes as the first challenge to any rider. As a rider, you must always monitor the traffic around you at all times. As you approach the freeway from the on-ramp, you must identify a safe spot that you can merge into and signal to accelerate (at a safe and controllable speed) into that spot safely, essentially merging with the freeway traffic. If you are already on [...]

Spotlight: Yamaha YZF R1

2013 YZf-R1 crossplane

Yamaha launched the YZF-R1 in 98′ to create a small engine by doing a “stacked gearbox” design which was considered revolutionary at the time.  The R1 hardly needs an introduction, its dual front ram air intakes and under-tail dual exhaust are enough to make anyone aware that this machine means business. The YZF-R1 has a 7-level traction control system (MotoGP) that has been developed, so it’s rider may not feel the harsh/unnatural intervention from the system. Additionally, traction control reduces tire wear owing to less wheel spin. The bike is powered by a 998cc in-line four cylinder engine and has all the technological advances developed for the previous model. This beautiful piece of machinery features a Yamaha Chip Control Intake; this intake system widens the spread of power, and the fuel injection system provides maximum smooth throttle response. The bike has excellent cornering capability and crisp handling due in partly to the aluminum frame that offers [...]

Kawasaki has been a steadfast builder for smaller motorcycles that are aimed at beginner riders. Many motorcycle outlets, online, have been praising the Kawasaki Ninja 300 ABS model as one of the best beginner motorcycles out there. The GP inspired clutch allows the rider to pull the shift lever with minimum pressure. About two fingers is all you need to shift gears. Beginner riders and first time manual riders will find the clutch on the Ninja 300 Abs easier with the assist and slipper clutch. The Ninja 300 Abs boosts some of the features from the larger ninja models such as the assist and slipper functions with the digital fuel injection system. The bike is also built to mirror the 600cc style without the heavier super sport engine. Most people wont be able to tell the difference since both bodies are similar in style and look. Actually, at first glance, the bike can be mistaken for [...]

Must Ride: Route One, Big Sur Coast Highway

Exploring the must ride highways of California

Beginning in Morro Bay (San Luis Obispo County), the route one stretch runs along the California coast line for about an estimated 126 miles up to Monterrey Bay. This stretch of asphalt heaven has been named by the Department of Transportation as part of the national list of “All American Roads.” This list only has 19 highways and Route One is the only HWY representing California. Thus, is it a must see and ride hwy for anyone looking for a scenic route and a little adventure. The coastal view is breathtaking with inland scenery featuring waterfalls, rolling hills, flowered meadows, rock outcroppings, redwood forests, coastal mountains and lush valleys. Much of the media over time has honored this classic American route in many books, articles, magazines, websites and movies. Spotlight: Honda

Exploring the Giant Japanese automobile and motorcycle manufacturer

Does it surprised anyone that Honda continues to build the best fuel efficient motorcycles and cars around? Their bikes and cars have been placed among the top best fuel efficient lists in the USA since their entry into these markets. They are the world’s largest manufacturer of motorcycles and are ranked 8th largest automobile manufacturer in the world. Here is a list of Honda’s scooters/motorcycles with their impressive mpg:

1. Metropolitan – 117 MPG
2. Ruckus – 114 MPG
3. PCX150 – 102 MPG
4. CB500F – 84 MPG
5. CB300F – 60 MPG

At AK MOTORS, we currently have the 2013 PCX 150, but the 2015 CB300F was just sold. Click on the highlighted links to check them out! With the continuous increase in gas prices from time to time, it’s no wonder Honda strongly holds their position as the World’s Best selling motorcycle company in the world. Back in [...]

The “new” beginner standard, is what everyone is calling the 2015 Naked CB300F. From the smoothness of the engine braking, clutch action and suspension to the significant reduction in vibration due to the counterbalanced crankshaft; this bike is the ultimate necessity for beginner motorcycle riders. The CB300F shines as a commuter with a 17% increase in power than the CBR250R.  New riders will benefit from the upright position as it allows for a more relaxed state as opposed to a sport bike stance where it can make any new rider nervous as they cower forward over the gas tank. It has been dubbed the “perfect learning tool” by various online review articles. Combined with it’s impressive 60 mpg fuel consumption, the bike appeals, heavily,  as a perfect daily commuter. With it’s reduction in weight and price, I can’t see any other competitive beginner bikes being matched up as an equal to the Honda CB300F. Here are [...]

First introduced in 98’/99′, the Yamaha R6 took the middleweight world by storm with its high-horsepower engine and aggressive handling. The Japanese inline-four was an instant hit, and 1999 was the year the R6 took the World Supersport crown. One of the first updates came in the year 2001 with a newer fork and fully-adjustable shock. Of course, there were some other minor changes and small updates. The major re-vamp of the R6 followed in 2003 with all new styling highlighted looks and internally receiving fuel injection to have a slightly longer stroke for a full 600cc. With the chassis, the update came an inverted fork, more aggressive steering geometry, and piggyback rear shock. 2006 saw another revision with the new (previous) 599cc engine for higher rpms. Today’s R Series are built with the highest power, lowest weight and unrivaled agility. Everything about the R6 is built towards ultimate cornering for the rider and the [...]

Halloween Special: We’ve got this beautiful dual-purpose motorcycle by Suzuki. Kawasaki marketed a private labeled version of the DR-Z known as the KLX400 – it is practically identical to the DR-Z400 with the exceptions of the bodywork and some accessories. Those riders who regularly ride four-stroke dirt bikes will find themselves easily acquainted with the Dr-Z400SM. This is easily the most nimble thing on the road and full of fun. Riding on the freeway is super addictive as long as you keep it under 70 mph. The brakes and suspensions will expose themselves at their limits at much higher speeds. This bike is race-inspired and much better on the street then it’s predecessor DR350. However, this bike is a GEM. It’s reliable reputation, low price and high fun factor have made it incredibly favored among bike/dirt-bike riders. The engine is calm enough to give the most beginner riders confidence to push the speed a bit. [...]

The birth of a new street fighter motorcycle, in the triumph family, came around 2005. The street triumph R is a combination of a Daytona 675 and the street triple 675. Below is a picture of a 2012 Street Triple R that can reach 145 mph if you can hold on. The bike has Daytona’s identical suspension and brakes. The suspensions performance is closer to that of a Daytona yet, it is fully adjustable for the shock. Luckily for us, we currently have this bike in our inventory. Click for Triumph. This high speed rocket has lightweight wheels, cosmetic changes such as the bug eyed lights, 2 kg reduction in weight and a newer gearbox. 10 of the 12 gears are redesigned with new selector shafts and drums. Even though it is a street bike, this highly compatible motorcycle can function as a track day tool. Many have said that it is worth the extra cash [...]

If you’re looking for Motorcycle boots that look nice in public, then they’re probably not going to protect your feet. Motorcycle boots are highly relevant for bike riders, especially new riders. There are a variety of motorcycle boots for street use, off-road riding, cruising, racing, etc. Either way, when purchasing riding boots, we encourage consumers to consider various factors such as construction closures, materials, and height. A full-length boot is imperative in protecting a rider from foot and ankle scrapes, breaks and sprains. Even though it may be uncomfortable and stiffer, it does a world of difference when it comes to protecting a rider during an accident/crash. The ankle bone is protruding out and is more prone to injury during a slide or fall. Most times, the foot gets stuck during a collision, and the weight of the bike lays on the riders leg while it slides on the road. Having the height ensures that [...]
